Riviera Beach Front Yard Farm Historical Project
Grow food. Grow community. Grow legacy.
Our Mission
The mission of the Riviera Beach Front Yard Farm Historical Project is to strengthen food security, preserve cultural history, and empower residents through hands-on gardening, storytelling, and community connection. Rooted in the memories and resilience of the seniors who grew up in Riviera Beach during the 1950s and 60s, the project honors the legacy of Black pioneers who built businesses, protected one another, and sustained their neighborhood during the Jim Crow era.

Carey's Legacy Garden, 595 W. 7th Street, Riviera Beach, FL 33404A Living Garden & Cultural Learning Space
By transforming the historic Carey Store site into a living garden and cultural learning space, the project teaches families how to grow fresh produce at home, records and preserves community history, and creates a welcoming environment where all generations can learn, share, and thrive. Through monthly gatherings, oral history recordings, adaptive fitness, and partnerships with local organizations, the Front Yard Farm Historical Project works to ensure that the stories, strength, and entrepreneurial spirit of Riviera Beach's founders continue to inspire future generations.
Our Community in Action
Preserving Community History
With training as a Master Gardener Volunteer and certification as a fitness instructor, Gloria brought her skills back to the community. She connected with residents eager to learn and found a like-minded partner in a local organic garden company, Endeavors by Ali. Together, they began hosting hands-on garden talks that helped residents learn to grow their own food. Their work made the need clear: people wanted not just food, but healthy food and a return to the knowledge many grandparents once had—how to grow it themselves. That shared purpose led to the Front Yard Farm Historical Project at Myrtle Carrie Legacy Gardens, near Martin Luther King Blvd. and Barack Obama Highway. The site is historically significant as the last remaining business building from a once-thriving hub of Black-owned businesses. It was owned by an African American woman who ran it from the 1950s through the 1970s, and many residents remember Ms. Carrie’s store as a place to buy groceries, often on credit, or stop for candy after school.
